Canine Good Citizen Prep Class
This six-week class is designed to help handlers and their dogs master the skills not only necessary to earn the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award, but also to be well mannered members of the family and community.  This class is open to all dogs (including mixed breeds), who are at least 8 months old and provides a solid follow-up to a puppy class or beginning obedience training.  (It is recommended that dogs have some previous exposure to classroom obedience training prior to enrolling.)

  • Cost:  $75.00 per dog (* CGC testing not included.)
  • Time & Location: Monday evenings 6:30 pm -7:00 pm (Arabian Knights Farm)
  • Price: $75.  (Preregistration required)
  • Dog Ages: 8 months and older by the first class date.  There is no upper age limit. 
  • Maximum class size: 10
  • Requirements:

• All vaccinations must be up to date.
• A six-foot leash.  (no retractable leads or harnesses.)
• A properly fitted chain collar, buckle, or prong collar.  (no shock collars)
• Treats and/or toy rewards are encouraged. Treats should be soft and small.
• Plastic bags for picking up after your dog.
• Your signature on a “Release from Responsibility” form at the first class.

Children under 16 years of age may not be considered the dog’s primary handler, although they are welcome to attend, observe, and help during class when requested by instructor.

Whether or not you wish to obtain your dog's AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) award, this class will train through all steps of the CGC program so that your dog may:

  • Accept a friendly stranger
  • Sit politely for petting and grooming
  • Walk on a loose lead
  • Walk through a crowd of people
  • Sit, lie down & stay in place on command
  • Come when called
  • React appropriately to another dog
  • React to distraction & sounds
  • Remain well behaved during a 3 minute separation

* Students who wish to participate in a Topline AKC CGC Evaluation may do so for an additional fee.  (Consult Topline’s CGC Test schedule for dates and times.)  Dogs who successfully pass the CGC evaluation will receive a Canine Good Citizen Award from the American Kennel Club.

In order to complete the test and receive a CGC certificate from the American Kennel Club, your dog must be able to sit, stay, and walk nicely on a leash and complete the following activities:

  • Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger.
  • Test 2: Sitting politely for petting.
  • Test 3: Appearance and grooming .
  • Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead, no choke or prong collars.)
  • Test 5: Walking through a crowd.
  • Test 6: Sit and down on command and staying in place.
  • Test 7: Coming when called.
  • Test 8: Reaction to another dog.
  • Test 9: Reaction to distraction.
  • Test 10: Supervised separation.
